I like listening to Jason Mraz. His songs you tend out hear out the world are the poppy love songs, like “Lucky” and such. I like those songs. But I have a very special place in my heart (and life) for Jason Mraz’s FUNNY songs. Humor is my gut response to pain, so it’s no surprise that when things are stressful, I am re-watching Deadpool or becoming a last-season devotee of “What We Do in the Shadows.”
I’ve been a fan since I first heard him sing on Austin City Limits (PBS TV) back in 2004, and I finally treated myself (and my family) to one of his live concerts for my birthday this summer. He came out early, before the opener, and did a casual stand-up set of what might be best described as “charming dad jokes” playing on the fact that the venue was a former quarry — think “rocks” jokes, think “Stones” jokes. :) He’s a chatty performer, joking with, talking with, listening to, and don’t forget singing with, the audience. The mood was chill but the vibes were warm, and it was fun and funny and occasionally deep, and the music was outstanding, and we danced — by the end of the night, everybody danced.
As the year ends, I’ve been thinking about how a couple of his funnier songs have been in heavy rotation for me. They are not as well-known as “I’m Yours” or even “More Than Friends,” and the humor is kind of a gallows humor, but always centered by humanity and love. Maybe you’ve never heard these, and maybe hearing them would help you face 2025 with a smile? (Even if it’s a gallows-smile.)
“Before it All Ends”
by Jason Mraz
It hasn't rained in a hundred days
But the waters still rising in other ways
The world may soon be going down the drain
I just want more time with my baby before it all endsYesterday was hot but it was hotter today
I hope tomorrow we can still go out and play
Yeah, the world may soon be going up in flames
I just want more time with my baby before it all endsBefore it all ends
Because a meteor came crashing on our beds
Before it all ends
Because our presidents threw nuclear warheads
Before it all ends
Because the world wide web done swallowed all my friends
I just want more time with my baby before it all endsOf all that's been not much remains
Yeah the only constant thing is change (constant change)
The world may soon be going down the commode
I just want more time with my baby before we explodeBefore it all ends
Because the earth is flat and we all went over the edge
Before it all ends
Because we all got anal probed by aliens
Before it all ends
Because everyone thought that dollars made more sense
I just want more time with my baby before it all endsYeah, I just want more time with my baby before it all ends
This is not a joke
I just want more time with my baby before it all ends
“Time Out”
by Jason Mraz (featuring Sister Carol)
Who's sorry? I'm not sorry (Who's sorry? I'm not sorry)
Who's sorry? I'm not sorry (I'm not sorry)
[Verse 1: Sister Carol]
You twist and you turn
You got the urge to burn
The government should really be the least of your concern
The privilege to do is what you earn
To be yourself and free yourself is what I've come to learn
No more political dreams or elusive schemes
A reefer-lution outbreak is what it seems
Give me consent, yes to vape or steam
Burn to redeem
[Verse 2: Jason Mraz]
I've been playing too hard for way too long
Burning the candle at both ends & now it's gone
I feel broken (Broken)
Busted-open
I thought I was a baller, but my body has spoken
No joke, we go for the glory
But I'll probably have another 'fore I finish this story
And one more inside of me
Then both my body and my mind, don't need apologies
Well, who's sorry? I'm not sorry (Who's sorry? I'm not sorry)
Who's sorry? I'm not sorry (I'm not sorry)
I guess It's time to take a time
Time, time, time to take a time out (Time out)
Slow down & take-a time
Time, time, time to take a time out (Time out)
I've been working overtime for way too long
I gave it everything I had till all emotion was gone
And now I'm hoping (Hoping) to move along
Away from any voice that makes me think I am wrong
I need focus
No hocus pocus
I'm gonna throw my f*in phone in the ocean
Who's sorry? I'm not sorry (Who's sorry? I'm not sorry)
Who's sorry? I'm not sorry (I'm not sorry)
Because it's time to take a time
Time, time, time to take a time out (Time out)
Lay down & take-a time
Time, time, time to take a time out (Time out)
It's time to take a time
Time, time, time to take a time out (Time out)
4: 20 is the time
Time, time, time to take a time out (Time out)
Out of respect-a
I request-a
That we take a little time to siesta
Save the drama, for your mama
'Cause this ain't Broadway
I'll remind ya
I require
Time to re-stoke proverbial fire
And retire, a la playa
Because life is a beach anyway
I'm taking it easy (Taking it easy)
I'm taking it slow (Taking it slow)
You bet I'm taking it easy (Taking it easy)
I'm taking it slow
[Verse 5: Sister Carol]
Tick a tick a tock a dis is no time to rock
Tick a tick a tock a this a must Spliff-a-clock
Excuse me while I light mi likkle ting upon the dock
Time fi mi self, ah man, a mi nuh need nuh flock
Undivided and provided by mi brethren 'round the block
The sky-grade a my-grade, it loud like a Glock
Sticky like a sitten whey dem have inna the stock
Time to meditate a mi seh time to get knock
Bonus: You Fckn Did It
^^ You have to listen for the words yourself on this one. Don’t take the lyrics literally and nit pick them — the mode is GOOF
If you’ve stuck around this long, here’s one last song, this one’s not funny, it’s just true and it speaks to my heart:
“Everything is Sound”
by Jason Mraz
When there is love, I can't wait to talk about it
When things get rough, I like to walk with you
Or when it's night, I like to be the light that's missing
And remind you every minute of the future isn't written
Not yetWhen there is love or when the heart feels heavy
We can lighten it up, if you've had enough
Well, you can empty your glass and we can fill it back up
You know it's up to us to make it all upSo what you making up? I can make it up back
You could be loved no matter what
And know the only time is right now, it's right where, where you are
You don't need a vacation when there's nothing to escape fromSinging
La, la, la, la, la, la
Let's all sing
La, la, la, la, la, la
Laying it down
Everything is soundLet's sing to be happy, to feel things, to communicate and be heard
Or sing out to protest and to project and to harmonize with birds
Whether it's your birthday or your dying day
It's a celebration too
Rejoice to use your voice and give wings to any of choice
Whatever you're choosing right now, it's right where, where you are
You don't need a vacation when there's nothing to escape fromSet your vibration and undulation to the hightest it can go
And trust me, hear me
If it makes you wanna sing
Just sing itLa, la, la, la, la, la
Let's all sing
La, la, la, la, la, la
Laying it down
Everything is sound
La, la, la, la, la, la
Let's all sing
La, la, la, la, la, la
HallelujahIt's a song that I've forgotten often
It doesn't make me wrong
'Cause we all need the darkness to see the light
In our own eyes, come on and sing itLa, la, la, la, la, la
Let's all sing
La, la, la, la, la, la
Laying it down
Everything is soundLa, la, la, la, la, la
Let's all sing
La, la, la, la, la, la
Hallelujah
We're connected now
Love me some Jason Mraz.
